ABOUT: LONG VERSION

WHAT'S THE POINT?

WE BEGIN, WITH PEOPLE

People tend to fear things they don’t understand.

When it comes to mental health, if people don’t know how to become more healthy or even start on the road—they tend to not move into that fog. Unfortunately, what that means is, they are limiting themselves. They are thinking that they can’t learn how to have better mental/emotional health, or maybe that some people just know intuitively how to be healthy—they were born that way—and they think they weren’t born with that understanding.

The reality is, learning requires a journey. And without the journey it’s going to be difficult to learn how to become your best self. This is one of the reasons why your families and even the college system—as far as it relates to health and wellness—fail us. It’s not necessarily the fault of the family or the university, it’s the fault of the timing of the student. When you are 6, 8, 18, 19 years old, you just don’t understand why you would need to know this information and so, you tend to forget about it. Maybe your “institutions” didn’t take a stab at trying to teach this, not for fault of their own, they probably weren’t taught either. We don’t know, what we don’t know.

Once you enter into adulthood, and try to deal with that anxiety, anger, hopelessness, or shame by yourself . . . through self-help books or podcasts. Maybe you even took a stab at talk therapy and found a dud therapist and so it was of no help, suddenly all that information you learned from families or school . . . or not . . . becomes important. That is why Healthy Minds exists. We exists to help you create a “prompting event”—to help you become your best self—who you were meant to become.

I wonder how many people have not self-actualized or become their best self because people didn’t want to enter into a fog. They didn’t know what they didn’t know, so they didn’t begin. With not beginning your internal journey, I wonder then how many businesses haven’t been started, or how many careers have not been activated or how many leaders are just limping along . . . because they didn’t want to enter into the fog. Well, the mental health journey is no different because you don’t exactly know how to do it or exactly know what’s going to come up doesn’t mean that you aren’t capable of thinking through your emotions and solving the actual problems (instead of trying to solve the emotions that happen because if the problems) as they happen. You are. We are here for you, and with you along that journey. Yes, it may be messy, but taking a messy journey to a place you want to go is a lot better than staying in a place where you are not satisfied. Life is too short for that.

The point of healthy minds is that the way you lead yourself by making decisions, needs a philosophy. You need a Northstar, your own personal mission engraved in your mind. When you can convert your decision-making process, toward what’s actually good for you (healthy) and good for others, you move toward self-actualization - being internally integrated.

We're a team of . . .

. . . dream makers and vision builders.

Hi.

Thanks for stopping by.

A bit about me? My professional life has spanned 20 years, two careers, and a handful of industries. I am a business woman, artist, educator, activist, licensed (in the state of MN) and practicing practical clinical counselor (LPCC).

My first career in graphic design spanned nine years in both the non-profit and for-profit business arenas and took me across the country, from my hometown of Brookings, SD to La Jolla, CA, Houston, TX, and  Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

I changed course from art and design in 2007 and attended Bethel University's graduate program for psychology counseling in St. Paul, MN. It is now twelve years later and I have no intention of leaving, I'm loving these roots! Since graduating with my master's degree, I have been an active clinician, counseling general outpatient clients and specializing in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Leading DBT groups and individuaI therapy for the past ten years I've been studying how to live well and what contributes to well-being. I have studied the effects our emotions and thoughts have on the way we live, work, lead, parent, love, and build relationships.

I have worn many hats in my professional life so far and am now adding a new one. My latest work focuses on the importance of nurturing empathy, belonging, and developing a resilient spirit in our business leaders, families, and communities.

So so glad you're here.

What can I do for you?

What Does
Healthy Minds Do?

Fill two specific gaps.

-1-

DBT Class

Imagine: Mastering the life skills it takes to build the life you actually enjoy, aligned with your values, and moving continually, onward and upward. Class teaches skills to build that life. Enroll and attend to learn what to do to be Mindful. Or maybe Class is teaching how to effectively tolerate distress so you don't make a very difficult situation worse. Or learn how to regulate your emotions. You'll also learn how to have more effective and civil conversations around topics with high emotion. These skills come in handy when you have people in your life you deeply care about and intensely disagree with. Actionable skills right away.

NOTE: This is NOT a DBT program. That's a 3.5hr/week commitment and about $18k for the year. This Class is just the Class portion of a DBT program and costs only $19.99/Class (or you can purchase the year at a discount). Just the skills.

DBT Grads: If you've completed the year-long DBT program and have been thrown up into the sky to fly (except it feels more like a crash course in free-fall) come to Class to keep those skills fresh and accessible.

Why We Do What We Do?

When people engage skillfully in the areas of life that directly contribute to well-being, they build a life they enjoy, a life full of purpose and meaning - even at work.

Fulfilled humans seem to spread a lot of light, love, and joy. These are three things we are very fond of and would like a bit more of in the world.

Wouldn't you?

“I remember like it was yesterday. Change is hard. It was honestly so hard at first. And if I hadn't . . . [shiver] who would I even be today? A suckier version of myself, that's who.”
